Cinco de Mayo celebrates the first Battle of Puebla, where the Mexican army defeated the French during the U.S. Civil War on May 5, 1862. In modern-day America, Cinco de Mayo has mostly become commercialized into a day that gives people as good a reason as any to go grab some tacos and margaritas – as if people really need a ‘reason’ to do that.
If you find yourself craving good Mexican and Latin American food, look no further than the greater Annapolis area. There is absolutely no shortage of favorites among residents and visitors of Anne Arundel County, and trying any of these is sure to be a hit before and after Cinco De Mayo. So, what are you waiting for?
Senor’s Chile (Edgewater) and its sister restaurant Mi Lindo Cancun Grill (Annapolis/Parole)—Have you ever had a Birria taco before? Visit either location and have this local favorite and change your life.
Picante Cocina Mexicana (Annapolis) – A quaint spot in the heart of Annapolis. Their large menu has everything you could think of, along with their brunch menu (with bottomless mimosas) that is sure to please.
Hispa (Edgewater) – Another favorite is Hispa, just a block up from Senor’s. A very local restaurant with the best pollo and yucca fries.
Mi Casita (Gambrills) – Laid back, flavorful, and original are words that come to mind when thinking of Mi Casita. All their dishes are fresh and give you a taste of Mexico from Gambrills.
Sin Fronteras (Annapolis/Parole) – A mix of the classics and some unique twists. Their chicken barbacoa is delectable, along with the rest of their eats.
El Toro Bravo II (Annapolis/Parole)—El Toro Bravo on Riva Road in Annapolis is always bustling with eager customers. The Molcajete, or "hot stone," is not only mouthwatering but also an experience!
Anejo Rose (Hanover) – A high-energy taste of Mexico with unique dishes. Their smash burger taco, Korean short rib taco, or birria ramen are as interesting as they sound, with a taste cannot be beat!
Uncle Julio's Mexican from Scratch (Annapolis) – a Tex-Mex joint that is good for friends or a family gathering. Their Taco Bar Tuesday for $12.00, served right to your table, needs to be your after-work plan from now on.
Agave Mexican Restaurant and Tequila Bar (Annapolis) – A lively spot with genuine, savory bites and a full bar. Their 5 unique guacamole choices that will amaze your tastebuds and $8 Margs from 2:00 - 4:00 PM make this the perfect place to kick back and enjoy.
JesseJay's Latin Inspired Kitchen (Churchton) – JesseJay's has amassed a large following since opening, and for good reason! Their chespita fries and their street tacos are to die for, and folks have been known to drive from DC and NJ for their authentic Puerto Rican Mofongo!
Mi Pueblo (Glen Burnie) and their other location, Mi Pueblo II (Severna Park) – A very authentic family-run restaurant now with two locations. The chorizo quesadillas are a must-try!
Vida Taco Bar (Annapolis) – Vida has everything needed to satisfy anyone's cravings. Their succulent chicken pastor or carne asada will keep you coming back for more, or if you're keeping it vegetarian, they have options for that as well.
The Picantillo (Pasadena) – If you want to relax with some margs and get your hands on a good ol’- fashion carne asada, this is your place.
Naty's Mexican Bar and Grille (Annapolis) – Naty's has a vibrant atmosphere that makes ordering all your favorites fun and easy (not to mention delicious). Try their fried Snapper for a different take on Tex-Mex.
Lime and Salt (Odenton) – Another hot spot with many local fans. If you go, trying the Yucatán burrito is a necessity; made with juicy pork al pastor, rice, beans, roasted pineapple, avocado, and tomatillo salsa.
El Oso (Annapolis/Parole) – A truly one-of-a-kind shop! El Oso sells tasty bagels in the AM and transforms into a beloved Mexican takeout by the PM. Satisfy your cravings at any time of day!
Jalapeños (Annapolis/Parole) – Beautiful interior, live music, and the most delicious small plates you could imagine. Must we say more?
El Cabrito Mexican Grill (Annapolis/Parole) – El Cabrito offers Salvadorian breakfast. If you don’t know what this is, get yourself there and order it, like right now!
And don’t forget some of the best food trucks in the area, and this is only a small sampling! They are always on the move, so catch them if you can.
Aztk – Highly recommended for just about everything but try the breakfast burrito or crispy chicken tacos if you can.
Tacos Friday – They have crispy, sweet churros, which should be enough to convince you right there. Get yourself one after enjoying their other authentic, irresistible delights.
